You just got a promotion! Congrats and champagne all around! Amidst this jovial time you do not realize that tomorrow when you come in you're gonna have some little rectangles with scratched out shit on it. Happened to me in college. Fucking sucks to start a new position and literally have to Second Fiddle for your predecessor conversationally for a month.
The Google definition of a business card follows: a small card printed with one's name, professional occupation, company position, business address, and other contact information.
It is a time-honored tradition no matter the culture. We need them to do all the shit from the definition! Right? I picked a devastating design, fixed up my e-mail address and now I'm off to the races! Right? When I go to BigBusinessConference next week I'm gonna be the bees knees with my number right there! #GirlBoss ...Right?
The truth is more like this. You're handing out little rectangles all weekend that will at best be used to make lines. Maybe if there is immediate communications they're worth it. "Oh, who was that Marketing kid I met earlier? He gave me his business card!" But two weeks later it goes like "That Marketing girl I met at BigBusinessConference was a rock star. She gave me her rectangle but I used it to hold my hotel room door open. Fuck! Her BMAP sounded really special!"
The sad truth is that in 2023 a business card is most valuable to enter a contest at a restaurant. There are many other ways to be remembered and make an official statement. Here are a few options for making an impression:
[QR Codes]
Yes, in 2023 everyONE has a QR code scanner in their phone. I would rather tap someone's phone for them than explain a portfolio.
[Businessocial Media]
There are a few options for communities that allow you to display your full resume and education and certificates. I prefer LinkedIn. It's probably the biggest and most likely to translate in most settings. There are others such as Alignable, Facebook, a simple search can get you a host of places to host your resume. This eliminates the need to verbally name qualifications and it's always accessible even without a LinkedIn account sign in.
[WebPages]
Who cares? SacredCow has an actual website built proudly with wix. No coding. Maybe a little design. If your best foot is forward giving out your TikTok link then go for it! Some people are best if you can only find their Instagram. I am saying that no matter who hosts it or not you should avoid handing out business rectangles and cardstock qualifications. Have a #PersonalHomepage
[Conclusion]
One Link, One QR Code, One Phone Swap, One PDF E-Mail and your world is at their fingertips. It has been SIX years of getting into information-share transactions with this consultancy. I have never gotten someone who did not know what a QR Code was or did not have an e-mail address memorised. Yes, this means less wallet clutter and more #SEX! [Seriously Educational Xperiences]
