As an entrepreneur I sometimes feel isolated in society. This article is about how to navigate the waters of a friend and their new project.

First of all, if your friend or relative is trying to sell you something they probably just got started. That does not mean that they are uneducated about the subject. They are more than likely overwhelmed with information and passionate. Next, you DON'T have to buy! It's okay to say No or ask for more information. Your loved one is trying to test out their pitch on someone who they have a relationship and trust. That's actually quite a compliment if they chose to let you in early.

After going through all of the P's and Q's finally you are ready to launch your new product. Probably the worst thing that can happen is not reaching an audience. Just lend an ear and an open mind when approached about the person in your life's new service. It can only help. And Thirdly, and the most cynical. Do NOT ask for a discount. This person is trying to run a business and asking for a discount is belittling. Instead you may ask to see testimonials or references, a website. These things are what the entrepreneur has created to give away for free.

Be mindful if they are starting out that things aren't all roses when building up. If you see an error, don't be nice. Put on your customer face and say something. You may have noticed something that is their company's Achilles Heel. They will either correct themselves or explain to you why you are incorrect. Be aware that they are trying to work out bugs and that bugs exist in businesses, products and services of all ages and sizes! Be the person in the room that is trying to learn rather than the person clutching their wallet. There's nothing more rewarding than giving someone a chance if given the opportunity.
